Bard on the Beach: An Introduction to Shakespeare and Contemporary Performance

Description

This class will introduce students to Shakespeare in the context of contemporary performance, through a selection of plays linked to the current season of Bard on the Beach in Sen̓ákw/Vanier Park, Vancouver. During the course, students will examine, interpret, and write about Shakespeare’s plays as performed in historical and contemporary contexts, while reflecting on their own position as reader, audience member, and critic of productions of Shakespeare now, in this place. Students will be required to attend at least one live performance of the current season of Bard on the Beach. Prior university coursework in Shakespeare studies or performance studies is not required.
